- What is the impact of more choice on the consumer and the Industry?

In my opinion more choice has had both advantages and disadvantages. As an advantage, it has given people a way to get information and entertainment in a variety of ways, that are tailored to suit. An example of choice in recent times has been the advent of digital television, resulting in a wide range of channels to suit people’s tastes. The problem I see with this however is that television has since been dumbed down, with less quality television being produced. Shopping channels have become the scourge of broadcasting, and even worse, gaming channels, which seem to have taken up the majority of space on freeview, which could have been used for better purposes. The vast majority of these so called ‘new’ digital channels in fact offer nothing more than endless repeats of programmes, and not even the lesser watched episodes either, just the same rubbish over and over. I understand that there are channels such as Sky1 and the Disney network that produce high quality new programming regularly, but none seem to match up to the standards of the main 5 broadcasters.

- Will the Internet become the dominant content distributor?

I believe that the internet is the future for all major mediums. Looking at radio in particular, the internet offers a wider range of choice, far more than conventional radio ever could, and the ways to listen online are fast becoming larger. As Uk-wide broadband continues to be rolled out on a wireless network, I predict a future whereby the internet either replaces or continues to converge with standard radio. DAB is failing in the UK due to poor choice and audio quality – a shocking number of stations broadcast in 96kbps Mono, which is inferior to FM quality. Online stations, in contrast, broadcast in a wide range of bit-rates, all the way up to 320kbps, which is extremely high quality. As online stations continue to grow, too, myself being a part of one, I can see them eventually beating the larger corporations in terms of listenership

- How are social networks changing the media landscape?

Social networks are changing the media landscape in many ways. It is bringing people together, offering exciting ways to interact with TV and Radio outside the standard programme times. Many DJs now post updates from their shows and lives from applications such as Twitter, which is a good site because it is robust and mobile enough to be updated from literally anywhere. Facebook offers endless opportunities, from sharing content, to conducting debates, to getting to know the celebrities and media staff in much more detail.

- What does the future hold for the Media?

Of course nobody can truly say where the Media is going – 100 years ago nobody knew that television would overtake radio in terms of the main medium for the masses. Looking at the wider picture, in the short term I can see a radio industry where the BBC continues to dominate, where networking continues to grow in commercial radio due to the recession, forcing cost cuts, although smaller stations may pop up due to the backing from the public to hear radio which is local, creative, and personality driven instead of the current ‘that was, this is’ climate on some stations. In terms of actual technical futures, I predict one that is internet driven, whereby everything can be accessed from one device, radio, television, internet, and all of which are convergent. The listener will have more choice, and will have an even greater sense of interactivity with the media on a mobile scale.

- Can you push boundaries using new technology channels and extend content to new audiences?

In the current industry, the tools are there to be even more creative than in the past. Technology has the potential to deliver even the most simple of ideas in new and exciting ways to a brand new audience, for example retro programmes being upscaled to a HD screen, or being converted to 3D. Sky TV is currently working on 3D technology, which I think will be a great triumph and an herald an exciting new age in TV viewing. The viewer has always yearned to feel as if they were truly experiencing a programme as if they were there, outside of the expensive cinema environment. Having this technology in the home will allow people to interact with shows, and not just see or hear content, but immerse themselves in it.

- How do you measure success?

Success of a programme to me is one that not just achieves high Rajar or BARB ratings, but one that influences the views of the people or gets them involved emotionally. The best shows are ones that people don’t just watch or listen to once, but talk about and discuss with others, and remember for a very long time.

So far has been a slow process, but it’s been one of structure and precision. One of the problems I’ve had with this module this year is that it clashed with 2 other modules, giving a hefty workload. Despite this, I feel as a group we’ve worked really well together and at the end of it we will achieve a good result.

At the beginning, to be honest I was a bit concerned at the lack of communication between us. We had never worked together before, so it took time for us to get to know each other. However after meeting up a few times I felt we really started to connect. As producer I feel I played a big part in this, as I encouraged input from all of us. Had I been with people I knew better, however, or in the same group as I was with for other modules, I think I probably would have got things done a bit quicker, because I hardly see my group outside of university life. Having said that, getting to know new people has had it’s advantages because it meant we could criticise ideas and opinions without feeling guilt, and it got us a bit more motivated to produce higher quality work.

On a personal note, I feel I’ve gained alot from this module. I have learnt more advanced techniques in Adobe Audition, I feel more confident in trying out new ideas for future radio shows, have a better understanding on what sounds good, and have learnt how to use the studio mixer to my advantage. Speech radio is something I’ve never really thought about until this module started, and I now know that I have some sound knowledge which I can maybe take to my work placement at BBC Coventry And Warwickshire.

In terms of the programme, Fusion music has not been my cup of tea, and probably never will replace my love for rock, but I must say, listening to alot more bhangra and world music has opened my eyes to a new, interesting genre which I probably didn’t appreciate as much.

If I could improve mine and the groups performance in the future, I would definately manage my time better, and get an early start on production to ensure we get the highest quality programme. I would also be more precise with interviews, and liase with my team better to further our skills, and ensure we are working on the same mindset, so that everyone knows what is expected, when it is expected, and most importantly, how we are going to achieve.

I plan to listen to more examples of niche youth programmes in the future too, as some of these will hopefully give me inspiration and examples that no text book will ever do

Today we had a run through with Shelley present, giving us feedback. Most of the programme is coming together now. We have a brilliant show intro which myself and Guvi put together, which captures the mood of the show perfectly – fast paced, fresh, and diverse. Featuring an uplifting bhangra beat placed against my voiceovers which are slightly robotic, it makes for a rivetting start.

The feedback from Shelley was as follows:

* The interview with Rob Rymond needs cutting down, as there are some bits which are repetitive

* A clearer script for Guvi needs writing for the History Of Section – he felt uncomfortable reading it out

* The show ideas are really good, just need polishing off

* Timings need to be exact, so work on them next week

I’m happy with these comments, and I feel with a bit of work, we can get a great show out of this:

The plan of action for myself is now :

* Record Voiceovers for more jingles, to seperate the packages

* Obtain music beds to underlay the voices

* Continue to motivate the presenters and guests to ensure high morale and confidence

Fusion: DfusedD is a radio programme which aims to resolve the complex issue of what music fusion is. We aim to do this by giving our listeners a chance to contribute their ideas through social networking site, we create a meaning of fusion which has been decided on by the listenres. DfuseD is aimed at the younger radio listeners of 16-30 as they are youthful, diverse and recently very opinionated about what they want. This type of music show will appeal to them mainly through the diversity within this group, they will have experiences of different types of music which has been fused, open to new ideas and also due to the assistance of our show have a developed understanding of where the music they like come from as well as contribute to more of it.
We have also targeted this age group as they are more accessible via the web and are interested in media they can interact with and influence. This is mainly due to the fact that they are used to living in a world of consumerism and are more demanding, by handing over the power to them they are able to engage more in the show as they feel more a part of it.
The show will begin with a small introduction using a jingle we will make.
The main ways we choose to defuse fusion is by beginning the show with a brief history of what fusion is . This will include examples of music fusions which were key to the development of fusion music such as a track from Asian dub foundation, the specials and other key artists. This will then lead to us discussing what fusion is now by explaining the difference between artists collaborating and the actual fusion of different types of music using examples such as Jayz and Linkin Park.
These two items we feel are ideal to begin with as the history eases the listener in giving them insightful information they may not have known and bringing them up t o date with music they will be more familiar with, keeping them engaged and entertained. The delivery of these items will be in a fast paced edit using a combination of music in the background while presenter (Nina) is speaking to playing small sound clips to illustrate particular artists and points in history.
Fusion now will lead us to our first interview with our two guests T-Minder a Folk Bhangra vocalist and Sabrina an RnB vocalist who have recently collaborated on a song fusing both their genres. This interview will include them talking about their views on fusion, why they chose to collaborate, how they came together and what the future holds for them in terms of fusion. This interview will be pre-recorded to avoid any uncomfortable silences in the studio and allow us to explore their answers in more detail to obtain interesting responses. The interview once edited will be played over their song. After this interview we may possibly have a small interlude playing our jingle again as a way of reminding the listeners of what they are listing to as well as an update of what is to come.
After the interlude we shall begin our discussion of what fusion is. In this discussion our main topics will be called fusion is? This title has been opened on our face book group to allow people to discuss if fusion is music created by different artists collaborating or the mixing of two genres. It will involve reading out what people have suggested as well as a possible phone in. our second discussion will be the different genres people feel should be fused which is also on our face book group which acts as a relaxing point in the show reading people’s views.
Subsequently the discussion will be an interview with a radio DJ Rob Rymond who will discuss what fusion means from the dj scene answering questions based on how well the public react to fused music, does he try to mix new music while playing our just because he feels one song follows well after another, as well as his views on the future of fusion in terms of the type of music out now and the responses he gets from them. This interview may be played over a song we feel appropriate and also pre-recorded.
After this interview we will return to our discussion of what fusion is in terms of artists that have collaborated. This will include examples such as jayz and linkin park, jay Sean and boy better know and so on. This will then lead into an item of fusion in the future discussing emerging artists which we are still to be sure of.
To end the show we will play a short jingle to signify the ending of the show including information about how people can get involved and where they can view their points and contribute. And finally went on a pre-recorded exclusive of T-minder and Sabrina’s song as this emphasises the exclusivity of fusion.

Our production is now coming along nicely. Yesterday we spent the afternoon in the main radio studio and recorded an interview and performance from Sabrina and Tminder, two up and coming fusion artists, who merge Soul, RnB and Bhangra. It was quite an interesting afternoon, and we came out with some good material.

A few things could have been improved upon on our part though, we weren’t as organized as we could have been, having no definite plan for the questions and recording. Some of our questions weren’t worded very well, and the interviewees got a bit confused. We also hadn’t taken the time to learn how to use the recording equipment beforehand, however we managed to get a good idea of how to during the afternoon, so I feel we’ve come out with some great material.

The attention now turns to an interview with Keefy and the final recording, the history of fusion package. We intend to plan out the history of recording tomorrow, and record it hopefully on Monday. Keefy’s interview will be recorded and packaged by the end of Sunday, hopefully.

This raw edit can be found as a podcast here! http://broadcastproduction.podomatic.com/

I’m happy with the interview, because even though Rob didn’t know too much about the actual artists of Fusion, he had obviously done some research into the genres, and gave some really interesting points. If I would do anything different next time, I would make sure either my connection was a bit more reliable to avoid glitches in the recording (The interview was recorded via Skype), or I would record it on a phone line, or get him into the studio live.
